Dear Theresa,

I am writing to you because you are the person who has the final say on whether to approve the use of water cannon across England and Wales. Please don’t authorise their use.

I remind you of your comments in 2010: “I don’t think anybody wants to see water cannon used on the streets of Britain because we have a different attitude to the culture of policing here in the UK. We police by consent and it depends on that trust between the police and the public.” In 2011 you said “The way we police in Britain is not through the use of water cannon. The way we police in Britain is through consent of communities.”

These were wise words and I am sure that you can see that the trust between the Police and the public will be eroded by the introduction of water cannon, so I urge you to make the right choice and deny the Police access to these lethal weapons.

Yours sincerely,

Barrie Sharpe
