1973 An Angel In A Red Polka Dot Dress

I was exited; my friend Marcia was taking me to see the new Wattstax movie in Leicester Square. The main attraction was Rufus Thomas performing “The Funky Chicken”; it would be my first time seeing the various the American soul artists, which I had been listening to, in action. The movie was great, the music funky and the dancing mesmerising; then there she was, the girl in the red polka dot dress dancing for 35 glorious seconds, an angel with smooth black thighs, dress so short that you momentarily glimpsed her white panties, but most of all she danced like a funky dream. I have loved the girl in the red polka dot dress ever since that moment.

  1. That’s my Grandma’s friend! The woman in the red and white polkadot dress’s name is Robberta. She’s an Inglewood native. Her and my Grandma went to the concert together. My Grandma doesn’t talk much with her anymore though. The dancing goddess is now in a Los Angeles aging-home. I don’t know much about her now, but I bet she’s still moving just as good!!!!

Hi, I’ve often wondered about various people in the Wattstax film, Ms. Robberta being one of the people. I was only about two when this was recorded but I’m an avid music fan. Do you have any current info on her? I understand that she is in a nursing facility. I pray she is doing well and still doing the breakdown! ❤️

I was sixteen years old. My brother let me hook school with his friends and him. They put their nickels and dimes together. One person went into the movie theater and opened the back door. Then, the entire group rushed into the theater. When I saw the the brothers and sisters on Wattstax, I knew I was moving to Los Angeles one day, which I did do in 1983. One of my dreams of life was to meet the sister in the orange polka dot dress. I did not get that opportunity. To this very day, I still watch the sister in the polka dot dress that still makes me remember watching her in the theater here in Baltimore. That's one bad soul-sister. She blew a sisteen year old's mind.
